PROJECT CASE STUDYSee how AriStone restored a worn black-and-white checkerboard marble floor in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The project included deep cleaning, scratch repair, honing, polishing, and sealing to revive the floor's appearance.

After purchasing their Paradise Valley home, the homeowners discovered beautiful natural stone floors throughout the property, including a distinctive black-and-white checkerboard marble floor near the courtyard entrance. Because this was one of the first areas visitors would see, they wanted the marble to make a memorable first impression. Surface wear, scratches, and an uneven sheen were distracting from the pattern, so their goal was a cleaner, more consistent finish that would bring out the contrast between the light and dark stone.
Before restoration, the black-and-white marble showed surface scratches, dull areas, and uneven reflections.

Our team restored the checkerboard marble floor through cleaning, localized scratch repair, diamond honing, polishing, and sealing.
Deep-cleaned the marble to remove accumulated soil and surface contaminants before refinishing.
Used handheld diamond abrasives to address localized scratches and worn areas.
Honed the marble with three progressively finer diamond abrasive grits to refine the surface and prepare it for the desired sheen.
Polished the marble with a polishing powder to enhance the shine and bring out the contrast in the checkerboard pattern.
Applied a penetrating sealer to help protect the restored marble against staining.

The stair railing and its closely spaced posts made it difficult to refinish the marble evenly using larger floor-polishing equipment.

Our technicians carefully polished the marble around the railing by hand, blending these difficult-to-reach areas with the rest of the floor for a consistent appearance.
